The PhD Program in Nursing is based upon the beliefs that nursing is a science and that doctoral preparation is best accomplished when the faculty-student relationship is a partnership of inquiry. The program is designed to offer challenging learning opportunities to develop each student as a nurse-scholar.

Overall purpose

The program was designed to prepare nurse-scholars to:

  1. Assume leadership roles in nursing and health care.
  2. Advance the body of knowledge that guides the practice of nursing.
  3. Conduct nursing research.
  4. Participate in developing social and health policy.

Terminal objectives relating to the purposes of the program

  1. Assume leadership roles in nursing and health care.

    1. Initiate and maintain collaborative relationships with nurses and individuals in other disciplines.
    1. Mentor peers and other students in professional and research roles.
    1. Actively participate and assume leadership roles in professional organizations.
  2. Advance the body of knowledge that guides the practice of nursing.

    1. Synthesize nursing knowledge from an advanced critical perspective to inform. Evidence-based nursing practice.
    1. Translate research findings for practice.
    1. Participate in the iterative processes of theory, research and practice development.
  3. Conduct nursing research.

    1. Conduct mentored and independent scientific research.
    2. Apply ethical principles to the conduct of research.
    3. Generate research that embraces the complexity of humanity.
    4. Disseminate research findings in multiple.
  4. Participate in developing social and health policy.

    1. Analyze the social and political forces interacting in policy development with particular reference to how research is informing policy.
    1. Recognize at-risk populations and marginalized constituencies in relation to the impact of research on social and health policy
    2. Advocate ethical decision-making in policy formation.
